Design Justice Collaboratory

An Invitation for to Co-Create More Just Worlds

The pressing policy challenges we face, from housing to the climate emergency, require diverse perspectives, forms of knowledge and expertise for the creation of transformative policies and programs. When researchers serve those most directly affected by these challenges, more socially and environmentally justice solutions emerge. There is a greater need to connect researchers in university, community, non-profit and civil service settings to collaborate together and address these issues collectively.

Design justice is a commitment to deliberative democracy in practice. Healthy, vibrant, flourishing democracies mean that citizens influence decision-making and that their voices are heard. Design justice is an innovative, interactive and imaginative approach to designing artistic, research and policy initiatives with a justice-oriented lens, which takes seriously the stories and lived-experiences of those most directly affected by the pressing policy challenges of our times. A design justice collaboratory specifically refers to creating conversations in concert with a diverse group of academics, activists, artists, community leaders and civil servants who share a commitment to building brighter, healthier more ecologically sustainable futures.

This collaboratory started as a research group convened by Dr. Sarah Marie Wiebe from the School of Public Administration at the University of Victoria along with the undergraduate and graduate students she is working with. As a public-facing group, we welcome participants to join our monthly meetings held both on and off campus. In particular, this collaboratory will be of particular interest to academics, artists, activists, researchers, community leaders, members of the public service and anyone with a passion for community-engagement in their personal and professional lives.
